A massive thing that keeps coming up is:
How quickly can you get back to your usual plan after a slip-up?
Or, in other words, can we do everything within our power to avoid the “I’ll start again on Monday” mindset?
“Consistency wins” — you hear it everywhere.
In my eyes, what consistency means for you in the year ahead is not how you avoid mistakes, but rather how quickly you bounce back after you inevitably make one.
Most people are chasing perfection and using the start of a new year to provide that framework. No past mistakes yet means I can complete this year with 100% perfection. But that’s exactly where things go wrong – Because life happens. When that does happen, people’s yearly goals slip off within the first week and are almost completely gone within the first month.
Rather than chasing occasionally great or even worse, a perfect score – Aim for consistently good. People who make better progress aren’t ones who are perfect, but ones who can bounce back quicker after a setback.
For the year ahead:
Avoid “starting again on Monday.”
Start again now.
Make a mistake on Wednesday? Go again Thursday.
Have a bad meal or overeat on a Wednesday afternoon? Start again at dinner.
One bad choice or slip-up doesn’t write off a whole week – at least, it shouldn’t. It only does if you let it.
Mistakes will happen. You’ll miss sessions or make poor nutrition decisions. We all do. Just get straight back to your plan as soon as possible.
